On Saturday, March 18, 2023, over 300 middle and high school students will share performances, documentaries, exhibits and more during the Fairfield Regional Contest at Sacred Heart University. Students are competing for a chance to advance to the State Contest on May 6 at Central Connecticut State University.
The Fairfield Regional Contest is one of six Connecticut History Day Regional Contests held this spring. They are the culmination of months of intense study and project development. Students choose topics related to the 2023 theme of Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas, then conduct research by interviewing experts and shape their findings into sound historical arguments. Working alone or in groups, students use their research to create projects in one of five categories – exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers, or performances.
Students at the Fairfield Regional Contest represent the town of Fairfield and surrounding towns Shelton, Weston, Westport, Norwalk, Greenwich, Ridgefield, and Stamford. Students will present their projects to judging teams beginning at 9:30 a.m. The judges—educators, historians, and history-lovers—will review the projects and choose the top three. Members of the public are invited to attend the Contest.
During the day, students can tour the campus. The exciting day culminates with an Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m. The winning students and entries from the Fairfield Regional Contest will be posted on Contest Winners – Connecticut History Day (historydayct.org) on March 20. Students placing in the top three spots in each category and division (juniors- grades 6-8, seniors-grades 9-12) are invited to the Connecticut History Day State Contest. Students that place in the top two at the State Contest are eligible to participate in the National History Day Contest, held in June at the University of Maryland.

An affiliate program of National History Day, Connecticut History Day (CHD) is a Connecticut Democracy Center program in residence at Connecticut’s Old State House. CHD annually engages thousands of middle- and high-school students in historical research, interpretation, and creative expression through project-based learning. Support has been provided to CTDC through a CT Cultural Fund Grant from CT Humanities (CTH), with funding provided by the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut State Legislature.
